Foundry Clusters in India
Foundries in India operate in clusters. Indian foundry business is estimated to have a turnover of approximately $ 19 billions, out of which around 15% – 17% is for export market. The internal market for foundry is huge as foundries serves many segment like auto, railways, tractor, ship, engine and many more.
There are about 5000 factories in India into foundry operations and majority of them are from MSME sector. about 30% of the foundries have international certifications. 70% of the castings produced are in Ductile Iron grades, but its easy to find factories into Steel Alloys, Pure Steel Grades and High Performance grades of Steels.
On the other hand foundry and forgings are considered as Dirty operations in USA and in Europe, so India poses as a strong contender for global foundry requirements.
- Foundry Clusters in India
Foundries in India operate in cluster form. Each cluster cater to the needs of specific product range. For example, tractor and hand tool industry is being served by Punjab cluster. whereas Pump and Valve industry is being served by Coimbatore cluster. - Sector wise consumption of Castings:
Automobile Sector consumes approximately 1/3 of the castings produced, followed by Tractor and Earth Moving Equipment segment.
- Management challenges to MSME foundries:
The family business ownership of Indian foundries do understand the need of professionals into daily operations, but there is a shortage of quality managers who want to work in foundries. - Efficiency improvement required:
Indian foundries has right stage set for increasing the export market share from 6% to a bigger level, but they need to improve efficiencies, bring new technologies/ processes and improve SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) on shop floor.
